Aotea Disc form pendant
A hand crafted Disc form pendant carved in Aotea jade. Here are some words from the artist about the type of stone, its meaning and symbolism within the MÄori world; "Aotea is an exceptionally vibrant stone that can show colors of Blue, green, white and black. A story I remember about Aotea is that it was the Gift RĆ«aumoko gave to Rangi (Sky), Papa (Earth) and Tangaroa (Ocean). The intention of this gift was to bring peace to this unsettled world. Aotea is only found in New Zealand and is prized by the people of KÄti Mahaki/ Makaawhio. The nature of this particular Aotea ( reminded me) of stories of how the sky was divided into layers. Some say TÄne Climbed these heavens, others give credit to TÄwhaki. Such stories made me reflect on how the heavens guide us. They directed the navigators here, orators directed the spirits of our deceased to âreturn to the heavens, the true home of Mankindâ. Those who have passed on are often referred to as âyou who have become as eyes in the night skyâ. I have used all the stones I gathered in my journeys to create this piece. And so we look to the heavens to direct us as we recognise that the true nature of man is spirit.â We are all just walking each other homeâ.-Babba ram Das."
